How Dual-Type Effectiveness Math Works in the Pokemon Type Calculator
With 18 elemental types in modern mainline games, there are 18 single-type profiles and 153 unique dual-type combinations—creating 171 distinct defensive charts to memorize. Even veteran tournament players occasionally second-guess whether a secondary typing neutralizes an incoming attack or compounds it into a devastating one-hit knockout. Our Pokemon Type Calculator resolves every mono-type and dual-type interaction instantaneously.
Behind the scenes, the battle engine multiplies the effectiveness of the attacking move against Primary Type A by its effectiveness against Secondary Type B:
- Compounded Double Weakness (2.0 × 2.0 = 4x Damage): When both of a creature's types are weak to the same attack—such as Dragon / Flying (Dragonite, Salamence, Rayquaza) facing an Ice Beam, or Water / Ground (Swampert, Gastrodon) facing a Grass-type Energy Ball—the target suffers quadruple damage.
- Neutralized Cancellation (2.0 × 0.5 = 1x Neutral Damage): One of the smartest ways to build a defensive pivot is pairing a type that resists your primary type's weakness. For example, Water is weak to Electric (2x), but Dragon resists Electric (0.5x). Consequently, a Water / Dragon type like Kingdra, Palkia, or Walking Wake takes purely neutral 1x damage from Thunderbolt!
- Compounded Double Resistance (0.5 × 0.5 = 0.25x Damage): When both types resist the incoming element—such as Heatran (Fire / Steel) taking 0.25x damage from Fairy, Ice, Bug, Grass, and Steel—even high-base-power attacks barely scratch its HP bar.
- Absolute Immunity Override (2.0 × 0 = 0x Damage): An elemental immunity always multiplies the entire equation by zero. Even though Flying is weak to Electric and Rock, Gliscor and Landorus (Ground / Flying) take 0x damage from Electric because Ground is completely immune.

Top 8 Best Dual-Type Combinations Ranked by Defensive Math
We ran all 171 type pairings through our Pokemon Type Calculator to rank the strongest defensive dual typings in Generation 9 competitive play based on total immunities, resistances, and minimal weaknesses:
| Rank & Dual Typing | 0x Immunities | 0.5x / 0.25x Resistances | 2x / 4x Weaknesses | Iconic Competitive Users |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| #1 Steel / Fairy | 2 (Poison, Dragon) | 9 (8 at 0.5x, 1 at 0.25x Bug) | 2 (Fire 2x, Ground 2x) | Zacian-Crowned, Tinkaton, Magearna, Mawile |
| #2 Normal / Ghost | 3 (Normal, Fighting, Ghost) | 2 (Poison 0.5x, Bug 0.5x) | 1 (Dark 2x only!) | Hisuian Zoroark (Only 1 weakness in the game) |
| #3 Steel / Flying | 2 (Poison, Ground) | 8 (6 at 0.5x, 2 at 0.25x Grass/Bug) | 2 (Fire 2x, Electric 2x) | Corviknight, Skarmory, Celesteela |
| #4 Water / Ground | 1 (Electric) | 4 (Fire, Poison, Rock, Steel) | 1 (Grass 4x only!) | Swampert, Quagsire, Gastrodon, Whiscash |
| #5 Bug / Steel | 1 (Poison) | 8 (7 at 0.5x, 1 at 0.25x Grass) | 1 (Fire 4x only!) | Scizor, Forretress, Escavalier, Genesect |
| #6 Steel / Ghost | 3 (Normal, Fighting, Poison) | 9 (8 at 0.5x, 1 at 0.25x Bug) | 4 (Fire, Ground, Ghost, Dark) | Gholdengo, Aegislash |
| #7 Water / Fairy | 1 (Dragon) | 6 (Fire, Water, Ice, Fight, Dark, Bug) | 3 (Electric, Grass, Poison) | Primarina, Azumarill, Tapu Fini |
| #8 Ghost / Fairy | 3 (Normal, Fighting, Dragon) | 1 (Bug at 0.25x) | 2 (Ghost 2x, Steel 2x) | Flutter Mane, Mimikyu |
Notice how Normal / Ghost (introduced with Hisuian Zoroark) cancels out Normal's Fighting weakness and Ghost's Ghost weakness to boast three full immunities and only a single 2x weakness to Dark! Meanwhile, Bug / Steel and Water / Ground also have only a single weakness across the entire 18-type chart, though it is a 4x double weakness that opponents can exploit if they carry a coverage move—which you can test using our Pokemon Coverage Calculator.
Complete 18-Type Offensive & Defensive Quick Reference
When using a Pokemon Type Calculator during live battles, keep these high-impact interactions top of mind:
- Ground & Fighting (The 5-Target Breakers): Ground and Fighting are the only two elemental types in the entire game that hit 5 different types for 2x super-effective damage. Ground crushes Fire, Electric, Poison, Rock, and Steel; Fighting crushes Normal, Ice, Rock, Dark, and Steel.
- Ice & Rock (Glass Cannon Offenses): Ice and Rock each hit 4 high-value types for super-effective damage (including Flying and Dragon/Fire), making them premier offensive coverage moves, even though defensively Rock has 5 weaknesses and Ice resists only itself! (Note: In Gen 9, Snow weather boosts Ice-type physical Defense by 50%, dramatically improving Ice's bulk).
- Type-Altering Abilities & Items: Always remember that certain abilities modify the standard output of a type chart: Levitate and Earth Eater turn 2x/4x Ground weaknesses into 0x immunities; Flash Fire and Well-Baked Body grant Fire immunity; Sap Sipper grants Grass immunity; Storm Drain and Water Absorb grant Water immunity; and Thick Fat halves incoming Fire and Ice damage.
Frequently Asked Questions About the Pokemon Type Calculator
No! Multiplication is commutative (A × B = B × A). Whether a creature is listed as Grass / Poison (Venusaur) or Poison / Grass, its defensive weaknesses, resistances, and immunities in the Pokemon Type Calculator are 100% identical.
Normally, Water resists Ice-type attacks (0.5x). However, the signature Ice move Freeze-Dry has a built-in override that treats Water as weak (2x) instead of resistant. As a result, Freeze-Dry hits Water / Flying (Pelipper, Gyarados), Water / Ground (Swampert, Gastrodon), and Water / Dragon (Kingdra, Walking Wake) for devastating 4x double super-effective damage!
Hawlucha's signature move Flying Press is the only dual-type attack in the game: it deals Fighting-type STAB damage while multiplying both Fighting effectiveness and Flying effectiveness together against the target.
In Generation 6, GAME FREAK introduced the Fairy type to balance Dragon's dominance and removed Steel's old 0.5x resistances to Ghost and Dark attacks. That single change turned Ghost and Dark into two of the most spammable neutral attacking types in modern competitive play.
