Pokemon Damage Calculator
Compute exact HP damage ranges, 16-value roll arrays, and one-hit knockout (OHKO) probabilities for Generation 9 competitive battles with our Pokemon Damage Calculator.
💡 EV Tuning Tip: Notice how each of the 16 discrete rolls corresponds to a 6.25% probability step. In VGC Level 50 teambuilding, shifting just 12 or 16 EVs from Speed into HP or Special Defense can turn an opponent's 75% OHKO (12/16 rolls) into a guaranteed survival! Check type multipliers first in our Pokemon Type Calculator.
How the Generation 9 Pokemon Damage Calculator Formula Works
Every competitive match in Scarlet & Violet VGC and Smogon singles comes down to precise arithmetic. When you click an attack, the battle engine does not generate a continuous floating-point number; instead, it performs floor-integer truncation at each step of the equation. Our Pokemon Damage Calculator replicates that exact step-by-step integer pipeline so you can benchmark offensive knockouts and defensive survival spreads in seconds:
Base Damage = Floor( Floor( Floor(2 × Level ÷ 5 + 2) × BasePower × Attack ÷ Defense ) ÷ 50 ) + 2
Final Roll (r = 85..100) = Floor( Base Damage × Weather × (r ÷ 100) × STAB × TypeEffectiveness × Item )
- Level Scaling Factor: At VGC Level 50, the level constant
Floor(2 × 50 ÷ 5 + 2)equals exactly 22. At Smogon Level 100, that constant jumps to 42. - Attack-to-Defense Ratio & Base Power: The move's Base Power is multiplied by your effective Attack (or Special Attack) and divided by the target's effective Defense (or Special Defense), then divided by 50 and incremented by 2.
- The 16 Discrete Random Rolls (0.85 to 1.00): The engine generates a uniform random integer from
85to100inclusive. Because there are exactly 16 integers in that range, every individual roll in our Pokemon Damage Calculator carries a 1/16 (6.25%) probability of occurring. - Chain Modifiers (STAB, Tera, Type Chart, Items, Terrain): Finally, Same-Type Attack Bonus (1.5x or 2.0x), type effectiveness (from 0.25x to 4x), held items (Life Orb 1.3x, Choice Specs/Band 1.5x), and weather/terrain multipliers are chained onto each of the 16 rolls.
Key Competitive Damage Modifiers Reference Table (Gen 9 VGC & OU)
When configuring benchmarks inside the Pokemon Damage Calculator, use this reference table to select the exact multiplier for popular held items, abilities, field effects, and Terastallization states:
| Modifier Category | Competitive Item / Ability / Field Effect | Exact Multiplier | Competitive Teambuilding Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Same-Type Tera STAB | Tera Type matches original base type (e.g., Tera Fairy Flutter Mane) | 2.0x | Upgrades standard 1.5x STAB to 2.0x (stacks with Helping Hand & Items). |
| Choice Items | Choice Band (Physical) / Choice Specs (Special) | 1.5x | Massive immediate wallbreaking power, but locks user into first selected move. |
| Weather Boost | Rain (Water moves) / Harsh Sunlight (Fire moves) | 1.5x | Opposing move type (Fire in Rain, Water in Sun) is halved to 0.5x. |
| Life Orb / Paradox | Life Orb (1.3x) / Protosynthesis or Quark Drive Atk/SpA Boost | 1.3x | Life Orb costs 10% max HP recoil per attack; Booster Energy has zero recoil. |
| Gen 9 Terrain Boost | Electric, Grassy, or Psychic Terrain (Grounded Attacker) | 1.3x | Nerfed from 1.5x in Gen 7 to 1.3x in Gen 8 & Gen 9. |
| Type-Enhancing Item | Mystic Water, Charcoal, Miracle Seed, Fairy Feather, Masks | 1.2x | Zero drawback and no move lock; Ogerpon's Elemental Masks grant 1.2x to all moves! |
| Doubles Spread Penalty | Moves hitting multiple targets in VGC Doubles (Dazzling Gleam, Make It Rain, Astral Barrage, Earthquake) | 0.75x | Applies whenever 2+ targets are on the field; reverts to 1.0x if only 1 foe remains. |

How VGC Players Use Damage Rolls to Craft "Bulk Benchmarks"
In open-team-sheet VGC tournaments, you rarely need 252 HP and 252 Defense EVs to survive a specific threat. Instead, world-class players open a Pokemon Damage Calculator, load the most common meta threat—such as Modest 252 SpA Choice Specs Flutter Mane Moonblast or Adamant 252 Atk Mystic Water Urshifu Surging Strikes—and dial their defender's HP and Defense stats up until the maximum 16th roll (the 100% roll) drops to 99.4% of max HP.
Every remaining EV saved by stopping at the 15/16 or 16/16 survival breakpoint can then be invested into Speed tiers or offensive pressure. Remember that at Level 50, assuming a 31 IV, the first 4 EVs invested in a stat yield +1 stat point, and every additional 8 EVs yield +1 stat point (4, 12, 20, 28, ..., 244, 252)—so never waste EVs on divisible-by-8 numbers at Level 50!
Frequently Asked Questions About the Pokemon Damage Calculator
In Generation 9, a Critical Hit applies a 1.5x damage multiplier and completely ignores any negative Attack/Sp.Atk stages on the attacker (such as Intimidate or Draco Meteor drops), any positive Defense/Sp.Def stages on the defender, and protective screens (Reflect, Light Screen, Aurora Veil). That is why Urshifu's guaranteed-crit Surging Strikes and Wicked Blow are so dominant in VGC.
The four Treasures of Ruin emit field-wide aura abilities that reduce a specific stat of all other Pokemon on the field by 25% (0.75x): Sword of Ruin (Chien-Pao) lowers Defense, Beads of Ruin (Chi-Yu) lowers Special Defense, Vessel of Ruin (Ting-Lu) lowers Special Attack, and Tablets of Ruin (Wo-Chien) lowers Attack. You can model Chien-Pao or Chi-Yu support in our Pokemon Damage Calculator by multiplying the defender's Defense or Sp.Def by 0.75.
Once a creature Terastallizes, the 80-Base-Power move Tera Blast automatically compares the user's effective Attack stat (including stat stages) against its effective Special Attack stat and uses whichever stat is higher—while always targeting the corresponding physical Defense or Special Defense of the foe.
A standard Burn status inflicts 1/16 max HP chip damage per turn and applies a 0.5x modifier to physical moves. However, Pokemon with the Guts ability (such as Ursaluna) ignore the burn penalty and gain a 1.5x Attack boost instead, and the move Facade doubles its Base Power from 70 to 140 while ignoring the burn reduction.
Because there are 16 discrete random damage rolls from 85% to 100%, if 10 out of the 16 rolls equal or exceed the defender's Max HP, the move has a 10 ÷ 16 = 62.5% probability of scoring a one-hit knockout.
